Identify mantas with Manta Trust

August 3, 2022

To better understand the movements and behavior of manta rays, send us your photos so that we can identify them.
You'll be able to track the mantas you've photographed while diving.

How do you photograph a manta to identify it?

Identify mantas with Manta Trust

First of all, basic instructions for approaching a manta ... stay calm, don't make any sudden movements and when it flies over you, try to hold back your bubbles!
The black patterns that stingrays have on their bellies allow each individual to be identified as unique in the same way as human fingerprints.
Thanks to these natural markings, researchers are able to organize their databases and track the evolution of populations around the globe.
If you'd like to make a contribution, these are the spots you'll need to photograph.
The ideal framing is to show the whole belly - a partial view is useless.
